We've brought our community Wellness Fairs, introducing fun ways for students to start experimenting with stress relief techniques. We've presented mindfulness techniques to new teachers across our district and to returning supporters of mental wellness. We've presented to teachers across the tristate area at the Grover TedX event and the Atlantic City teachers' convention. Now, we are proud to present or first of many events targeted at parents where we used professional voices to discuss the large scale implications of mental health: The Mental Health panel.
We were lucky to have four wonderful speakers, all of who are leaders and experts in the field of mental health advocacy. While summary does not do them justice, here is a cheat sheet of their accomplishments in the field of mental health:
Diana Chao: Founder of the largest student-to-student-based mental health initiative, Letters to Strangers. This organization lets anyone write open letters, anonymously discussing personal struggles, with topics ranging from mental illness, self esteem, loneliness, and beyond.
Eric Kussin: Founder of We Are All a Little Crazy, which brings together athletes, celebrities, and mental health experts to spread the message that everyone has mental health, and that it is not selfish to take care of it. Can we get snaps for that?
Gill McClean: Director of Professional Development and National Trainer at Pure Edge, Inc., an organization that shares strategies for educators that help them support social, emotional, and academic development of themselves and their students through mindful movement and rest.
Attitudes in Reverse (AIR): This organization has supported our mission from day one, holding sessions in our Wellness Fairs and providing therapy dogs to stressed out students during AP weeks. Attitudes in Reverse promotes anti-bullying and suicide prevention through mental health programming, helping break down the stigma surrounding mental health in our local West Windsor-Plainsboro district and beyond.
